My early morning writing habits coincide with the unconscious writing philosophy of Dorothea Brand, who teaches writing tutorials. Here are a few notes on early morning writing that I would like to share with you.
01 How to arrange early morning writing time?
I used to get up at 6:30, wash myself, dress and wash my children, plus breakfast time usually go out to work at 7:30. After the habit of writing early in the morning, I set the alarm to five o’clock for a while, but after a period of time I felt that the sleep time was too little, and I was afraid that it would affect my health, so recently I set the alarm to five thirty, which is much better, and I can sleep for almost seven hours. 02 What should I write in the early morning?
First of all, the writing tool is optional, you can write on the computer or on a paper notebook. A notebook page can write about five hundred words, I usually write at least one page, in the first line marked with  such number, meaning: July 11, 2016. Unconscious writing requires the writer to get up as early as possible – not to talk, not to read the newspaper, not to grab the book you put next to you the night before to read – and to start writing immediately. Write whatever comes to mind: last night’s dream, if you remember it; the previous day’s activities; real or fictional conversations; an examination of consciousness. Write down your early morning memories quickly and without judgement. It does not matter how well or usefully you write. Now your basic purpose is not to write immortal words, but to write down any words, as long as they are not a bunch of nonsense.
Again, even if the paragraphs you write down are messy, your thoughts are vague or impractical, and your thoughts are confused and difficult to understand, that does not prevent the success of this exercise. Forget that anyone will criticize you, and know that no one will see what you are writing now unless you are willing to show it to others. If you can, just sit on your bed and write in your notebook. I sometimes just write on my back, even though I know it’s bad for my eyes. Gotta change.
03 The unexpected benefits of early morning writing?
First of all, after a few days of consistent early morning writing, you will find that you can easily and effortlessly write to a certain word count. You will begin to feel as if real writing is no longer monotonous, and the rewards you get from writing down words are far greater than the ones you get from thinking about things without words in your head. If at any time you find that your imagination has deteriorated or is not active enough, that means you should put some pressure on yourself. Throughout your writing career, whenever you face the danger of running out of talent (which happens to even the most agile writers from time to time), remember to wake up in the morning and start writing, and keep it up until you can write as smoothly as you want.
Secondly, after a while, you will find that those writing manuscripts that come to you on the spur of the moment are usually interesting and can be turned into satisfying works with some revision and processing. They are sometimes a bit disorganized and rambling, but at the same time they have an impressively fresh and natural tone. By this time you realize that your work is not so incomplete and lacking in stability; you are blazing your own trail, finding your own style, and discovering which themes you have a continuing interest in. In Ms. Dorothea Brand’s experience as a professor, she says that students who write about dreams they had at night or idealize the previous day’s experiences, as well as those who write a full-length anecdote or a poignant piece of dialogue in their early morning practice, are likely to become short film fiction writers. Students who are good at certain types of characterization, short in length and with fairly common (or even obvious) characteristics, have the same seeds of development. Those who analyze their characters thoroughly, consider the motivations for their actions, have the same keen self-examination (in contrast to idealizing their own actions), and portray the conflicts of different characters facing the same dilemmas, have great potential as full-length novelists. A penchant for contemplative meditation or reflective self-questioning about an event is usually found in the notes of an essayist. But adding some elements of dramatic conflict, showing different thoughts through characters, and anthropomorphizing an abstract idea, such writing often reveals the seeds of a novelist who is more adept at psychological description.
04 How do you judge early morning writing manuscripts?
Ms. Dorothea Brand says that when we are in the stage of training ourselves to write, it is best not to reread our own work, and the less we nitpick about our work, the better – even a cursory examination is better with less. After a period of time, then examine it carefully and calmly.
Before examining those manuscripts for the first time, we need to be prepared mentally not to have any preconceived ideas about our own work. Try to forget all your past ambitions, hopes or fears, and see what areas you could find that would be most suitable for this unknown writer if he were to ask for your advice. The ideas that keep recurring in those exercises and the narrative forms that are often used will give you clues. They will show where your unique talent manifests itself and whether you will eventually decide to specialize in that direction. This examination will reveal what your richest source, your easiest style to write in, is.
The second time around we have to look at the material and notes accumulated over time with an everyday eye, with our usual thoughts, and learn to talk to ourselves and discuss the problems that arise in the text with objective critical discourse.
